All New … Dancing in the Storm

Four 90 minute sessions designed for online unitarian Universalist worship and faith development

We live in a time of constant change and the chaos of our world is trying on all of us, but most especially families, and families of color in particular. This curriculum is designed to help families bond together with other families to support one another through the changes and pain of our world today.

These four 90-minute sessions are designed to be offered for families online. Each session contains worship elements including chalice lightings, prayers, songs, and guided meditations, some with movement. Each session also offers a chance for faith development through personal reflection and creative exploration. All sessions are designed to be interactive and engaging for people of all ages.

Objectives of This Program

  • To reflect upon and share with one another about the constant state of change we are living in

  • To support families through times of chaos, social unrest for justice, and the unknown future

  • To explore how we can work for positive change in the world

  • To build resilience for the hard work that lies ahead

reflections on feelings about living in the storm

Our world is changing daily. A storm of change is brewing with people rising up to say enough is enough. Everyone is feeling uprooted and unsure about what the future holds. Changing the narrative to dancing in the storm can provide healing and build resilience.

We rise, we resist, we raise our voices

Each session uses a reading or poem from the book: We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices edited by Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson to explore the changes in our world, becoming resilient and learning to dance in the storm of change.

Before starting this online program, create a kit of supplies which can be mailed to families or picked up through a social distancing curb-side pickup arrangement. The children will be excited about receiving the kit and will start wondering what they will be doing which will generate interest in participating in the program. Parent(s) will be encouraged by the interest generated by their children, thereby making them interested in participating. Make sure you have enough supplies for every child in the family and include items like scissors and glue to not make assumptions as to what families have at home. A list of materials to include in the kit is included within the curriculum along with instructions for the creative activities.
